Dear Friend,

December 1, 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. New UNAIDS statistics provide reason for hope, although the pandemic is far from over.
  • Between 2001 and 2007, new HIV infections declined from 3 million to 2.7 million;
  • As a result of greater access to treatment, the annual number of global AIDS deaths has declined in the past two years;
  • Nearly 3 million people received antiretroviral treatment in low- and middle-income countries in 2007, a 45 per cent improvement over 2006.
